This story will make you smile :)
It's about a 70-year-old Priest, Father Pedro, and how he has given a life to over 1 MILLION people who are living in extreme poverty in Antananarivo, Madagascar. An Argentinean native, Pedro first came to Madagascar in 1970, and after witnessing some of the world's most brutal living conditions -- he decided to do something about it.
So in 1989, he raised €900 from Christian missionaries to create a community called Akamasou -- which offers jobs, schools and a better life for the people living in extreme poverty. Year after year, Pedro got more funding as the word spread about his initiative.
Today, Akamasou is a massive self-sufficient town which sustains more 25,000 people regularly, and has provided food, shelter & clothes to over a million people since opening its doors 30 years ago.
Pedro's philosophy is, "If you are not willing to work (or study), then you are not allowed to eat." And once you join his community, you are offered a very nice house and life than is unparalleled to living on the streets of the city.
Today has been one of the best travel memories of my life. Thank you Pedro for hosting me, and thank you to my local friends Ali, Dave, Nancy and Antonio for driving me here and helping translate from French to English!
