Black bears will demonstrate noises and postures to warn they are uncomfortable with a situation, these are not aggressive movements. This clip is the noise of the bear clicking its molars together, called jaw popping. Other warning noises or movements include: huffing (forcing a rush of air out of their nose), ground stomping, avoiding eye contact, bluff charging - this is when a bear runs toward something while jaw popping and huffing, but stops short of impact and avoids eye contact. If you encounter a bear displaying these signs, remember the bear is trying to communicate it is uncomfortable with the situation, not acting aggressively. It is best to back away slowly with your arms raised and speak in a calm, monotone voice while leaving the area. Although black bears are typically shy and afraid of people, there have been rare cases where people have been hurt by black bears. If a BLACK bear physically makes contact with you, DO NOT play dead or run, instead fight back by yelling, kicking, and punching the bear. Black bears are the only species of bear found in Florida.
