The port city Kherson in southern Ukraine has been under full Russian control since early March 2022. One week after Moscow’s invasion began on February 24, it became the first city or region of Ukraine to fall under full control of Russian troops. Moscow-backed officials are reportedly now pushing for formal annexation of Kherson, and its residents are anxious about the city's future after an estimated 45 per cent of its 300,000 inhabitants fled, along with about 20 per cent of the population of the surrounding region. Control of Kherson and partial occupation of the neighbouring region of Zaporizhzhia offers Moscow a chance to build a strategic land bridge between Russian-controlled territory in Ukraine to Crimea, the Ukrainian peninsula annexed by Moscow in 2014. On May 20, journalists got a press tour of the city of Kherson organised by the Russian defence ministry.
