US F 22 Raptor VS F 35 Lightning II Fighter Jet Comparison
Welcome to this video where we'll be comparing two of the most advanced fighter jets in the world: the F-35 Lightning II and the F-22 Raptor. These two planes are often compared due to their similar stealth capabilities, but they are designed to perform different roles. In this video, we'll take a closer look at the strengths and weaknesses of each jet.
The F-22 and F-35 fighter jets are among the greatest military planes ever made. They have raised the bar in military technology and only future sixth-generation planes are predicted to surpass them, but not for several years. These planes have top-of-the-line systems and powerful weapons, making them the sports cars of the skies.
While other formidable aircraft such as the French Rafale or Eurofighter Typhoon, and some new competitors from China and Russia exist, the F-22 Raptor and F-35 Lighting II are widely regarded as the best planes in the world at present. As of February 2023, the USAF has yet to unveil its sixth-generation fighter jet. However, considering the impressive capabilities of these two fifth-generation planes, they will still remain relevant for many years to come.
Is F-22 be the world's best fighter jet?
The Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor is currently considered the most advanced air superiority fighter in the world. It was created as a single-seat, all-weather, stealthy tactical fighter, with its first flight taking place on December 7, 1997. While its strength lies in air superiority, the F-22 is also competent in other roles such as ground attacks and electronic warfare. With top-of-the-line systems and features, Lockheed Martin has equipped this aircraft with the most modern military technology available.
The fifth-generation fighter possesses exceptional stealth capabilities that enable it to fly undetected in the skies. Thanks to a series of design choices made by both Lockheed Martin and Boeing.
The fifth-generation fighter jet also incorporates other stealth features like reduced acoustic signature and visibility to the naked eye. The F-22, manufactured by Lockheed Martin, is an incredibly fast airplane with the ability to travel at more than Mach 2 when its engines are using afterburners, which is equivalent to 1,535 mph.
The F-22's center underside of the fuselage houses the main weapon bay, which has enough space for six LAU-142/A launchers for beyond-visual-range missiles. The two side weapons bays, on the other hand, have enough space for one LAU-141/A launcher each and are for short-range missiles like Sidewinders.
The F-22's weapon bays are capable of opening in less than a second, allowing missile launchers to fire almost immediately. This quick action helps the Raptor maintain its stealth profile and stability at high speeds. Additionally, the jet has a Vulcan 20 mm cannon mounted at the right-wing and can carry bombs, making it a versatile air-to-ground combat machine.
What Makes The F-35 So Special?
Lockheed Martin also manufactures the F-35 Lightning II, a single-seat all-weather stealth multi-role combat aircraft that had its first flight in December 2006. Unlike the F-22 Raptor, the F-35 has three variants.
The F-35B is used by the USMC and has short take-off and vertical-landing capabilities (STOVL), which are useful for Marine missions. The F-35A, on the other hand, features conventional take-off and landing and is used by the USAF. Lastly, the F-35C was designed for aircraft carriers and is operated by the US Navy.
The F-35 Lightning II from Lockheed Martin has a lower top speed of around Mach 1.6 or 1,228 mph compared to the F-22. However, the F-35's stealth profile is a result of using radar-absorbent materials and other stealth design features. The F-35 Lighting II can carry a wide range of weapons with its two internal weapon bays and four stations, similar to the F-22. It also has a cannon, but it's on the left side.
Is The F-35 Better Than The F-22?
Let's start by comparing stealth capabilities, In terms of their stealth capabilities, the F-22 Raptor and the F-35 Lightning II have similar performance since both were designed and built by Lockheed Martin as air superiority fighters. It is challenging to compare the two aircraft beyond their stealth capabilities because they were designed for different roles, although there is some overlap in modern usage.
In terms of air-to-air combat, the F-22 Raptor is considered the most dominant air superiority fighter worldwide. On the other hand, the F-35 Lightning II is the most advanced multi-role fighter, making it more versatile for a wider range of missions. The F-22, being lighter and with a higher top speed, is more effective in high-altitude operations.
In terms of capabilities, one is excellent in air superiority and dogfighting, while the other can perform well in a wide range of missions including air-to-air and air-to-surface attacks. Both are exceptional fighter jets.
