Brian Chesky (Airbnb CEO) reminds us that every big company once started small... (Apple started off by selling blue boxes in the back of a trunk, Google started as a research project that the founders were going to sell for a few million dollars and they didn't know what to do with it, Amazon started off selling books online)
Airbnb got started because Brian and his cofounder Joe Gebbia were in San Francisco where a design conference was being held. BUT, every hotel was fully booked. So, they thought about renting out their apartment for conference-goers to make some extra cash while they thought of the "big idea". To them, AirBed and Breakfast (the original name of Airbnb) was a side business for them to make extra cash while they came up with the "big idea".
To their surprise years later, AirBed and Breakfast was, in fact, their "big idea".
These big things usually start as just hobbies or unprestigious toys that seem hacked together—mainly targeting you and a few friends. Crazy to see how big these "small companies" have become... 🤯
This is an interview Brian Chesky did on The Diary of a CEO podcast. The Diary Of A CEO with Steven Bartlett.
Your side project or hobby could be the next "big thing"!
