This video highlights an undergraduate project completed in the Cooke Lab of Carleton University during the summer of 2015. The research project looked at a phenomenon known as Fisheries-Induced Evolution (FIE). FIE is a result of humans unintentionally selecting for certain phenotypes in the fish that we capture. In recreational fishing, we inadvertently catch the most aggressive fish, which is important for largemouth bass as aggression is a principal component of male parental care behaviour. We compared unexploited sanctuary fish to non-sanctuary fish and found that sanctuaries are preserving the male bass with the greatest parental care
