Azotemia is a medical condition characterized by elevated levels of nitrogenous waste products, particularly blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and creatinine, in the blood. It indicates impaired kidney function, which can be due to pre-renal (decreased blood flow to the kidneys), renal (intrinsic kidney damage), or post-renal (obstruction in the urinary tract) causes. Azotemia is often an indicator of reduced glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and may progress to renal failure if left untreated.
