[ Ссылка ] General Valery Gerasimov has been named the new head of Russia's armed forces, as President Vladimir Putin continues his shake-up of the military hierarchy.
Gerasimov was put forward by new defence minister Sergey Shoigu, who presented Gerasimov to Putin before the official appointment was made.
Gerasimov already served as first deputy head of the General Staff between 2010 and 2012 and is described by Shiogu as "a military man from head to toe".
Shiogu replaces Anatoly Serdyukov, who was sacked as defence minister on Tuesday.
Serdyukov has been implicated in illegal activities during an investigation targeting military corruption. He is suspected of criminally selling property at below market value in return for kickbacks.
