German shepherds are among the most widely-adopted dog breeds in the world. Families love them for their protective attitudes, unwavering loyalty, and seemingly endless energy.
A dog can be loyal but it doesn’t mean it has the protective instincts to be a true protector and defend you at any cost.
In this video, we’ll go over traditional GSD characteristics and how – in the right households – they can be remarkably supportive and protective.
You can train a German Shepherd for nearly anything – with enough persistence, these dogs can learn impressive tricks, including protective behaviors.
German shepherds are naturally alert. Unfamiliar noises will wake them up immediately, and they’ll be naturally suspicious around unfamiliar people.
If you’re looking for a dog breed that will wake up in the middle of the night to ward off intruders, or bark at trespassers on your property, the German Shepherd could be perfect for you.
But it’s worth noting an important tradeoff here - German Shepherds need a lot of physical activity to manage their naturally-alert states.
Unlike some dogs that may be content sleeping on the couch most of the day, German Shepherds want to walk, run, and play as much as they can.
But above all else, German Shepherds are super eager to please their owners. If you can find a way to communicate what you want, they’ll do their best to oblige.
Behavioral issues are another common area of concern for potential owners, but it’s worth knowing that these sorts of issues come about from a lack of early-puppyhood socialization, and inconsistent training.
When this is done properly, coupled with the German Shepherd’s natural protective instincts, you’ll have the ultimate protective dog by your side that is ready to defend you and your family at all costs.
Their size also plays an important role in their protective abilities, and unlike smaller breeds that may still be somewhat protective despite their size, this won’t be an issue for GSDs.
Males will typically be 24-26 inches tall at the shoulders, while females will reach 22-24 inches in height. In terms of weight, many GSD bloodlines feature very large dogs that can reach upwards of 100lbs.
Given their size and strength, without proper training, their protective instincts can be overwhelming for under prepared families.
Their protective attitude can make them somewhat aggressive if you don’t train them properly and get them the exercise they need.
If you aren’t willing to commit to this, then you risk seeing their protective traits result in unwanted behaviors like food aggression, aggression towards other dogs or people, and being territorial with other pets.
Fortunately, you can mitigate these behaviors with proper training and have the great family protector you’ve always wanted.
