The only performance I have heard that uses a zither played beautifully.
Recorded in the 1950s. Ferenc Fricsay conducts RIAS (Radio in the American Sector).
Uploading this reminds me of all the hours I listened to music in the late 70s & early 80s with my friend Ed Lawrence, the best classical musician I’ve ever known. He played piano, violin, viola, and cello, all well. Piano and viola were his strongest instruments. Unfortunately he is deceased but he introduced me to what we could find many years before YouTube. Fricsay conducted 20 to 30+ years later than the end of the “golden age” of recorded classical music (actually most genres). He was the last great conductor who took RIAS to incredible heights for the time. Actually, the winds, brass, and percussion were, for the most part, better than those on the earlier recordings. The strings on those earlier recordings were much better. Ed had most, if not all, of Fricsay’s recordings. Being a radio orchestra, that meant an enormous amount spanning compositions from Bach to Bartok, about 47 CDs worth. Unfortunately, his records were filthy so he would put a bunch of cleaner on and used the fine brush to clean the record and sop up the liquid. When you pulled the table off, the circuit board had become discolored. I have uploaded my Masters recital where he played piano. Recently I found and uploaded his viola recital which is incredible.
