In 399 BCE Socrates was executed. He was accused of not believing in the gods sanctioned by the Athenian state. This event was the culmination of an outburst of reactionary fervor which gripped the city at the end of the Peloponnesian war. The trials of Socrates and Diagoras of Melos proved that the revolutionary ideas of the Presocratics were not only widespread but pernicious in the minds of everyday people. Books such as the Derveni Papyrus caused a furor of controversy. More questions appear: What is truth, and is it possible that there’re many “truths”, not just one? Is myth a way of thinking, or a kind of knowledge, or something else?
