I asked Shireen to help out with a sound test that I was playing around with. She would not call her self a guitarist but is learning this song. This video is a good indication of the quality of image and sound captured by our Canon 60D SLR camera and our stereo Rode NT4 Mic.
The microphone was plugged into two separate sound mixer inputs. The stereo image (which I was playing around with during the recording) was achieved by panning one input left and the other to the right. The recording starts with the panning on both inputs set to the centre and some reverb applied. I used a lead (2 x RCA to 3.5 stereo jack) and plugged from the sound mixers RCA outputs to the cameras phono input. A white ipod audio/video lead will do the trick if you have one.
Sound recording settings on the camera were set to manual with the input signal level set almost as low as I could get it (about 3 notches in). The adjustment to the sound signal peaking level was controlled by the mixers volume out, which is monitored on the cameras LCD screen. This seemed to create an incredibly good signal to noise ratio.
The camera image settings were - Auto, Full HD, 24fps.
Lens - Sigma 30mm f1.4.
Mixing console - Yamaha MG8/2 FX.
There was no post production used on sound or image. I hope that this info can be helpful. The same setup and configurations can be applied when using a Field mixer if portability is an issue. Cheers
