In an effort to clarify what contemplative prayer is, Fr. Thomas discusses what it is not. Contemplative prayer is not a technique, a human means of arriving at a certain end. Rather contemplative prayer entails a willingness to consent to a relationship. While contemplative practices may be accompanied by charismatic gift, such gifts are to be seen as invitations to take up the practice of contemplative prayer and commit to the spiritual journey. Para-psychological gift and para-mystical phenomena, while they can be by-products, are not the essence of contemplative prayer.
