Let's have a look at how Open Innovation projects and the Open Source Model differ.

Both methods of product development are based on the principle of open access to information. You probably heard about "Open Source Software" in the past and wondered what it means. Basically, anyone can assecc the source code of software or apps on the internet and - if they have the expertise - contribute to the product. Popular examples for Open Source Software is the Android operating system, the Mozilla Firefox browser or the photo editing tool GIMP.

The idea of "Open Source" development can be applied to more than just software: The most recent example is the fight of the Covid 19 pandemic. Scientists, organisations and universities from around the world have contributed in decoding the SARS-Cov-2 genome and helped the development of vaccines or medication by sharing their findings and knowledge. Do you have children? Then you might be familiar with "Lego Ideas": An online platform by the famous manufacturer of the construction toys created the platform to let users design custom Lego sets, discuss it and vote for it. Once it reaches a certain threshold, Lego may consider to turn a community-based creation into a commercial set. All of that can be summarized under the term "Open Innovation".
