This scene has gotten the most interesting and widespread interpretations in the comments, probably because we have all felt this mortal pain and fear through awareness in our lives. This resonated with me a lot as a kid as someone who felt an inconsolable, infinite longing and existential pain but couldn't articulate such a vast and complex feeling being so young. This movie gave me a space to have this mirrored in ways it couldn't be in my real life. Profundly comforting and disturbing.
How did it make you feel as a kid when you saw this? How about as an adult? Do you understand it differently than you did?
