An Underlap run is a movement that splits the Centre Back and the Full Back. An Underlap run also has a different effect on the defending team’s decision-making, particularly on the Centre Back.
In this short clip, Michael Appleton explains that if an Underlap is performed close to goal, the Centre Back has to either go with the forward run or risk leaving them alone which may allow the attacker in possession to shoot or cross freely. This makes the underlap a very dangerous forward run.
