‘Twisters’ premiere interrupted by #protest , #animals rights activist handcuffed after outburst
The film, starring Glenn Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones, allegedly portrays animal abuse without a disclaimer.
The Los Angeles premiere of Twisters was abruptly interrupted when a protester stormed the event demanding a disclaimer for alleged animal abuse depicted in the film.
Witnesses report that the female activist, unidentified at this time, rushed to the front of the Westwood Regency Village Theatre on Thursday evening just as the screening was about to commence.
Shouting fervently and brandishing a sign that read, "There’s no excuse for animal abuse. The film needs a disclaimer,” she was swiftly restrained by security and subsequently arrested by the police.
Eyewitnesses from PEOPLE recounted the chaotic scene where the protester's actions briefly halted proceedings.
Actor Glen Powell, one of the stars of the film, lightened the tense atmosphere by addressing the incident during his opening remarks before passing the microphone to co-star Anthony Ramos, who acknowledged the disruption with humor.
Following the incident, heightened security measures were observed at the venue, with police maintaining a presence both inside and outside the theater.
While it remains unclear whether the protester acted alone, a group of activists from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) staged a peaceful demonstration outside, wearing cow masks and carrying placards condemning the alleged depiction of animal mistreatment in the film.
PETA later took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), sharing images of the protest and tagging Universal Studios, the film's production company, demanding a disclaimer addressing the portrayal of animal violence in Twisters.
According to PETA's statement, the film's scenes allegedly glorify the torment and violence inflicted upon animals.
Twisters, a contemporary sequel to the 1996 blockbuster, features Glen Powell in the lead role as Tyler Owens, a social media personality known for storm chasing.
The film also stars Anthony Ramos and Daisy Edgar-Jones, and is set to release in theaters on July 17, promising a fresh narrative distinct from its predecessor.
