Why is gold so adored and coveted? What is the spiritual meaning of gold? What does gold symbolize in our world? Can we replace gold as the default value, a measuring tool for trade and interaction between people?
The price of gold is again rising and people are buying in all kinds of different forms. What is so special about gold that is a form of adornment? It is the adornment of the ego. But gold itself is not important. In general, we want to put our efforts into some kind of material object that is immutable, and won’t disappear or decay or rust.
On the spiritual level gold symbolizes egoism in its purest form. Gold relates to Keter, while silver relates to Bina. This means that when egoism is corrected, it is represented by gold and when it is on the way to correction when it is halfway to correction, then it is silver.
In terms of spiritual roots and corporeal branches, gold remains, it is irreplaceable. Of course, when there is no bread to eat, we do not deal with gold. But as soon as we start adding something else to bread, gold immediately begins to appear. It is made for a living.
Bread represents our necessities. But when we talk about our world, the world of excess we are talking about precious metals. As long as egoism rules, gold will be the universal, global equivalent of these egoistic forces. Once people trade their egos for good connections, gold will simply be equated to ordinary metal and will no longer be used for trade. Then only the value of bestowal to each other, which is a completely different kind of “material,” will be used as a measure for trading.
