How (not) to hike Robbers Roost -Sedona, Arizona
We all make mistakes. I just happen to record mine. Sometimes, you get a little relaxed in your planning. It happens to the best of us. Well...it happens to me. I was kicking several hikes around this day and hadn't really planned any well and I just decided to go. It was partially successful. A bad day hiking is still a good day, right?
First up was Robbers Roost. I'd seen the pictures and wanted to check it out. I can't help but think the people who lived there were envied by their neighbors. They had a tank right below them, a great view, and that cool round window.
I love Sedona, so I knew I couldn't go wrong, even if I didn't find it. I got there more easily than I was expecting, and discovered a whole new playground I need to get back to explore. Plenty of dispersed camping out there that I didn't know about.
Next up, it was Honanki Ruins. I found them just by looking at a GPS of the area. The ruins were...sad. They had more petroglyphs than I've seen before that close up, but almost all of them had graffiti scrawled over them. Just unfortunate.
There were some nearby ruins that I read about that I wanted to check out as well, but things really didn't go my way. I hadn't read up on the hike that much and was relying on a GPS point rather than a route. If I'd done my homework, I would have easily (maybe) continued on the path I had originally taken and reached them.
But hey, it doesn't always work out. It was still better than spending the day surfing the couch, and now I've scouted a large area with LOTS of canyons I want to explore.
