When we look back on the rise of Gaius Octavius, later known better as Caesar Augustus, the first emperor of Rome, we can see that it was marked by just the right mixture of skill and fortune.
His early life was very much shaped by his great-uncle Julius Caesar, who he tried to emulate and finish his pursuit of becoming the ultimate master of Rome.
Despite doing many great things for the Roman state, his rise to power was marked by cruelty death and crimes. In eyes of many, he was a despot who overturned the Roman Republic. But he was also the architect of the Roman Empire that is now so beloved by historians and ordinary people alike.
While not without fault, he brought stability in Rome. This fact and his abilities as a statesman would be surely missed in his successors.
