For his legendary number in IT'S ALWAYS FAIR WEATHER ('55), Gene Kelly bought his own roller skates near his house at the time. According to Kelly, the skates were not altered to accommodate his dancing, so he had no "help" when he had to tap.
The film was one of the last musicals of MGM’s golden age, and it is that rarest of creatures: a cynical musical. The story follows the misadventures of a trio of veterans after their 10-year reunion and their mutual disappointment at how far each has strayed from their dreams and youthful integrity.
