Violence exploded in Rome Saturday as thousands of demonstrators, some clad entirely in black, clashed with riot police on the second day of nation-wide strikes. Impromptu barricades were erected by protesters and set alight. Police responded by firing tear gas and physical confrontations ensued.
Protesters rallied against Prime Minister Enrico Letta's latest budget, wielding banners and flags while chanting slogans against Letta's economic policies. Around 4,000 police were deployed.
