If you’ve ever tried to use a Phillips head screwdriver and thought it didn’t engage quite right, it might not be your fault. It might have been a JIS, or Japanese Industrial Standard screw. If you look at the screw head from the top, they look nearly identical. But when you look at their individual drivers, or the spec sheet, you can clearly see the difference.
Phillips have a completely different angle profile, as well as a different fillet. These are the sorts of subtle profile differences that can make a screwdriver cam out of a screw, as well as damage it making it harder to remove when you have the proper bit. It’s well worth knowing the different screw profiles, just to make your work easier in the future.
