From John Vallins:
“In late 1998, my good friend, songwriter Gary Paige, was informed by his family that the remains of his great uncle, Private Russell Bosisto, had been unearthed in a fallow field near the village of Courcelette in France, 82 years after he had been reported killed in action during a battle to capture the Windmill at Pozieres Picardie in France on August 4th 1916.
He was 23 years old.
The lyric of ‘ A Field in France’ was written by Gary in one sitting not long after, and tells the story of a father talking to his son lost on the battlefields of France. He later asked me to put some music to it.
This new version of ‘In a Field in France’ (previously recorded by Jimmy Little in 2000) is sung by our friend Australian singer/songwriter Kevin Johnston, and on this Anzac Centenary year, is in memory of Russell and all those young men who lost their lives in the Great War.”
The photographs used in this clip are from the collection in the State Library of South Australia, historical footage, Bruce Topperwien and the Villers-Bretonneux Military Cemetary.
