When you have diverticulitis, it's generally considered to be chronic. Even though you may not always experience the symptoms, the disorder itself is still present in your colon.

A "flare up," or what doctors call acute diverticulitis, occurs when the condition manifests itself as one or more severe attacks of infection and inflammation resulting in severe, intense pain.

Besides extreme discomfort and distress, acute diverticulitis typically produces the following symptoms.

* Lower abdominal pain, which some people describe as feeling like a cramp. Such "cramps" occur on left side in 70 percent of patients.

* Change in bowel habits.

* Nausea and vomiting.

* Constipation or diarrhea, along with flatulence.

* Bloating.

* Fever.

Some people with diverticulitis never have a "flare up." Others may have a single, acute episode and then never have another. Unfortunately, some individuals suffer recurrent, distinct episodes. In such cases, severe pain and other symptoms come on suddenly, while in other cases they can also be mild and fluctuating.
