One of the many aims we’re working towards as the year progresses is to have a better understanding of our cats and their behaviours. It is been universally recognised across the wildlife sector that we fundamentally need a better understanding of all wild cats, big and small, in order to protect and conserve them. To quote Panthera, “only a handful of studies have investigated the ecology of small cats, and subsequently, there are huge knowledge gaps about species population sizes, threats, and more. This lack of data can significantly hamper conservation action and make many highly-threatened small cat species appear as low priorities on the conservation agenda. Moreover, while some species may be considered common, little is known about how changes in land use and other threats impact them.”
One of the ways proving really successful is through the use of camera traps, as it allows us to observe our cats in areas and at times that we wouldn’t normally see them, such as in their dens or at night. We have been incredibly lucky to have been donated a number of camera traps over the past year, either via our Amazon Wish List or by generous individual donors who have visited the sanctuary. Camera traps are a brilliant way of monitoring the behaviour taking place “behind closed doors”, as these are non-intrusive to the cats and start to record as soon as movement is detected. This way, we hope to see the most natural behaviours exhibited by our cats.
We’re incredibly pleased to say we’ve been able to capture some wonderful footage from another of our small cat residents, our female Eurasian Lynx Petra. In the clip below, we see that age is just a number when it comes to having a little bit of fun! Although one of our oldest residents, Petra still loves having a playful moment (even if it is at the expense of the camera trap!).
