I cut keyhole slots in the back of this mantle piece shelf because it is going to get sprayed & i don't want any fixings through the front,
I first made a jig from 18mm ply but 9mm or 12mm would do., then with a 15mm template guide in the router I cut a slot with a 6mm straight cutter then with the Axminsters 1/4" shank, 12.7mm diameter head, 6.7mm shank cutter.
