Let's face it - oil painting surfaces can get reaaal expensive. I wanted to see how I can use oil paint on paper in my sketchbook, so I would like to show you how you can do it too.
The key is priming your paper before you start. Painting directly without using any primer is going to make your painting less archival and even make the colours dull. There's a lot of different ways to size and/or prime your paper for oil painting, including gesso, oil primer, rabbit glue, gelatin and more.3
In this video, I compared two different ways of priming paper for oil painting - with and without a sizing paste. Spoiler alert: you can get away with just using gesso.
