With two similarly priced compact hybrid sedans in our test fleet, we decided to see how fuel-efficient they really are. The 2024 Hyundai Elantra Limited Hybrid and 2024 Toyota Corolla SE Hybrid are competitors, but with disparate EPA fuel-economy ratings because of the Corolla’s optional all-wheel drive, we decided to pit them not against each other, but rather their EPA combined mpg estimates.

Senior Road Test Editor Mike Hanley and Road Test Editor Brian Normile took these two hybrids on a 200-mile test loop near Cars.com’s Chicago headquarters, measuring fuel efficiency over a mix of highway, suburban and city driving.
