STORYLINE
Unidentified gunmen killed 12 members of an extended Shiite family near Latifiyah, a Sunni Arab-dominated town about 30 kilometres south of Baghdad, relatives, police and army officials said.
Iraqi police said on Friday the men were taken from their homes, packed into a minivan and shot.
Jameela Hassoun, one of the relatives of the slain family said the attackers were wearing Iraqi National guard uniforms.
"They entered to the house wearing Iraqi National guards uniform, they took them and plundered the house, they killed 12 persons," she said.
An Iraqi army spokesman also said a number of gunmen broke into three houses in Latifiyah at dawn on Thursday, took 12 males aged between 20 to 40, put them into a minivan owned by one of the victims, and killed them with machine guns.
No further details were available about the killing or the 12 victims.
