The annual wheat harvest in Greenfield Village will be happening on July 9 & 10! The Turkey Red winter wheat grown at Firestone Farm in is a non-hybrid wheat that is planted in the fall and harvested in mid-summer. Turkey Red yields a whole grain or whole wheat flour, reddish-brown in color, favored by artisanal bread bakers.
Our farmers use a late 19th-century Johnston self-raking reaper for harvesting. It does not bind the wheat like later binder reapers, so farmers would have to follow behind and tie the wheat into sheaves by hand.
Come see what it was like to harvest wheat in the late 1800s!
