Although microdiscectomy is considered the gold standard surgical method for lumbar disc herniation, the need for minimally invasive techniques and advances in the use of optical and surgical instruments have led to the use of transforaminal percutaneous endoscopic discectomy. Transforaminal percutaneous endoscopic discectomy has many advantages such as direct visualization of pathology, reduced soft tissue trauma, reduced blood loss, faster recovery, and preservation of adjacent anatomy. If certain steps are followed, it is an effective and safe method in the hands of an experienced spine surgeon.
