Gary W. Jay, MD, DAAPM, FAAPM, Medical Consultant, Raleigh-Durahm, NC, talks about the pain associated with bone metastases and how they usually present in practice.
Dr. Jay says bone metastases cause breakthrough pain in patients. He says it's an important consideration because many doctors don't understand what breakthrough pain is, either breakthrough pain in cancer or breakthrough pain in benign conditions.
Treatment for breakthrough pain is particularly important in patients with cancer who have bone metastases and know how their movements affect their pain because the pain can disrupt their lives.
Dr. Jay adds there is no approved prophylactic treatment for breakthrough pain.
