In this brief video you can find seven little known facts about the Bahamas.
More information about the video content bellow:
1. Nassau, the capital city of the Bahamas, was a popular haven for pirates of the Caribbean in the 18th Century. From 1703 to 1718 there was no governor in the colony and by 1713, the sparsely settled Bahamas had become a pirate haven. The Governor of Bermuda stated that there were over 1,000 pirates in Nassau and that they outnumbered the mere hundred inhabitants of the town.
2. Dean's Blue Hole is the world's deepest known salt water blue hole with an entrance below the sea level. It plunges 202 metres in a bay west of Clarence Town on Long Island, Bahamas.
3. In 1648, Puritans in Massachusetts learned that a band of brethren, religious exiles from Bermuda who were attempting to colonize the Bahamian island of Eleuthera, had come to grief through shipwreck and other misfortunes, were starving, and were in desperate need of help. The churches of Boston sent provisions to help them. The English settlers on Eleuthera shipped brazil wood to Boston to thank the people of Massachusetts for the support they had given. The proceeds from the sale of this precious wood was used to purchase the land for Harvard College, which eventually became Harvard University.
4. The Bahama Islands became the free and sovereign Commonwealth of The Bahamas on 10 July 1973, ending 325 years of British rule (but remains part of the Commonwealth). The Bahamas, with over 270 years of democratic rule, is one of the most politically stable countries in the world. The Bahamas does not have an army.
5. The Graycliff Restaurant is a 5-star restaurant situated in a 250-year-old mansion in Nassau. It has one of the largest wine cellars in the Western Hemisphere, with over 250,000 bottles of the world's finest vintages, and also has its own cigar factory. Graycliff originally belonged to a pirate, Cpt. John Howard Graysmith.
6. Junkanoo (which has been compared to Carnival in Rio and Mardi Gras in New Orleans) is a colourful and uniquely Bahamian parade held on Boxing Day and New Year's Day. The festival may have originated several centuries ago, when slaves on plantations in The Bahamas celebrated holidays granted around Christmas time with dance, music, and costumes.
7. The Bahamas has the clearest waters in the world, with visibility of over 61m. Which is fortunate, because the longest known underwater cave system in the world can be found in Lucayan National Park, on Grand Bahama Island.
