(26 Jul 2019) Brazilian police have begun investigating a sophisticated gold heist at Sao Paolo's main international airport.
718 kilos (1,583 pounds) of gold worth US$30 million was stolen by a gang who entered the airport cargo area disguised as federal police.
Assistant police chief João Hueb told reporters Friday that the robbers kidnapped the family of an airport worker to get in.
"One of the employees at the airport had his family held hostage and that forced him to let the robbers into the airport and give them privileged information like schedules, the cargo quantity that was going to be transported," Hueb said.
The hostages were released unharmed.
Police said the thieves hauled away gold destined for Zurich and New York by using two cars that looked like police patrol vehicles.
They dressed as officers and covered their faces at all times, making it more difficult to identify them through security cameras.
Police are investigating whether this robbery is related to a similar heist in 2018 when a thieves, using a pick-up disguised as a security vehicle, stole US$5 million from Viracopos airport, about 100 kilometers (about 60 miles) northwest of Sao Paulo.
