The Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs, Colorado must be one of the most beautiful parks in the United States - maybe the World!

The Garden of the Gods is a public park in Colorado Springs, Colorado and is free to all to enjoy. In 1971 this 1,367 acres park was designated as a National Natural Landmark. The park was first known as Red Rock Corral by the early Europeans. Interesting story about how it became known as the Garden of the Gods. It goes like this. In August of 1859 - two surveyors who helped set up Colorado City explored this area. One of the surveyors - M.S. Beach - suggested that it would be a "capital place for a beer garden". The other surveyor - Rufus Cable - was so awestruck by the Rock formations that he exclaimed " Beer Garden! Why it is a fit place for the Gods to assemble. We will call it the Garden of the Gods."

In 1879 - Charles Elliot Perkins purchased 480 acres of land which included a portion of the present Garden of the Gods. Upon Perkin's death , his family gave the land to the City of Colorado Springs in 1909. There was two provisions. The park must remain free to the public and the name " Garden of the Gods" can not be changed. Mr. Perkin's friend William Jackson Palmer owned the Rock Ledge Ranch close by and it was also donated to the City upon Palmer's death. In 1995, the Garden of the Gods Visitor & Nature Center opened up just outside of the park.

The Garden of the Gods is popular for hiking, technical rock climbing, road and mountain biking, and horseback riding. The park has 21 miles of trails with the main trail in the park being 1.5 miles of the 21. The trail is the Perkins Central Garden Trail which is a paved and wheelchair-accessible that runs through the heart of the park's largest and most scenic red rocks. The park attracts more than 2 million visitors a year.
