The Tunguska event was a massive explosion that occurred on June 30, 1908, near the Podkamennaya Tunguska River in Siberia, Russia. Around 7:14 AM local time, an explosion at an altitude of 5-10 kilometers (15,000-30,000 feet) flattened approximately 2,000 square kilometers (500,000 acres) of pine forest and charred more than 100 square kilometers of it. Eyewitnesses reported seeing a bluish light almost as bright as the Sun moving across the sky, followed by a large explosion. The explosion, believed to be caused by an asteroid entering Earth's atmosphere, left no impact crater. It was accompanied by reports of a fireball, massive forest fires, and trees being blown over for miles
