Mercedes made an announcement two years ago about a new sub-brand called the Mythos Series, which is set to debut in 2025, aiming to join the ranks above Maybach. This new series will kick off with a car based on the SL model, but with a notable difference: instead of the typical canvas top, the Mythos SL will sport two nacelles.
Essentially, Mercedes seems to be taking a page from Porsche's book by introducing a Speedster-style SL. But there's more to it; the team at Maybach is also developing an ultra-luxurious version of the SL.
So, by 2025, the R232 generation will be represented by three sub-brands: AMG, Maybach, and the freshly announced Mythos. While AMG and Maybach are well-known names, Mythos seems a bit out of place for what's supposed to be an even more opulent variant of Maybach. Personally, the name Mythos brings to mind a Greek lager from Olympic Brewery, a part of Carlsberg. However, I find Charma lager and Mamos pilsner to be more enjoyable options.
Moving back to the SL, whereas AMG models offer four- and eight-cylinder engines, both Maybach and Mythos will start with eight cylinders at the minimum. While enthusiasts might hope for a robust V12 under the hood, it's worth noting that as of February 2024, Mercedes-Benz AG has only two V12-powered vehicles: the Maybach S 680 and the pricier Benz S 680 Guard. These models feature the somewhat old-fashioned M279 twin-turbo V12, equipped with three valves per cylinder.
In contrast, the SL's M177 twin-turbo V8 boasts the industry-standard four valves per cylinder. Similar to the M178 found in the first-generation AMG GT, the M177 delivers either 469 or 577 horsepower in the AMG SL. If Mercedes-Benz AG intends to uphold the Maybach badge's prestige, it should offer the 577-hp version as standard in the upcoming Maybach SL.
At the top end of the spectrum, the R232 can be equipped with a hybrid-assisted V8. Named the 63 S E PERFORMANCE, this plug-in hybrid churns out 805 horsepower. However, being a performance-focused roadster, its all-electric range is predictably limited. In the EU, the WLTP range is just 13 kilometers (8 miles).
Considering the Mythos SL's exclusivity compared to the Maybach SL, it's reasonable to expect Mercedes to offer either the plug-in setup of the AMG SL 63 S E PERFORMANCE or a modernized version of the V12.
As for the price of the Mythos SL, it's anyone's guess. But given that the AMG SL 63 commands nearly 200,000 euros in Germany, the Mythos could easily exceed €300,000 ($325,000).
