Menstrual pads and tampons are applied directly to the most intimate areas of your body where they sit for hours. A woman will menstruate for an average of 38 years and use anywhere between 11,000 - 16,000 pads or tampons in her lifetime!
Anything against your skin can be absorbed directly into your bloodstream since there is no barrier to stop it. What makes matters worse is that the government classifies feminine hygiene products as medical devices, which mean that companies don’t have to disclose ingredients on the packaging.
Here are a few of the toxic chemicals that you should watch out for:
Toxin Number 1: Bleach – The bleaching process leaves behind by-products such as dioxin. Dioxin is a hormone disruptor that has been linked to endometriosis. Consider a silicone based menstrual cup or brands that use hydrogen peroxide instead of bleach which is a safer alternative.
Toxin Number 2: Artificial Fragrance - Artificial fragrances contain chemicals such as Propylene glycol and Polyethylene that can lead to vaginal dryness. These scents can also disrupt your vagina’s naturally acidic pH and lead to health conditions such as bacterial vaginosis or yeast infections. Look for brands that label their products as, ‘scent-free’ or ‘fragrance-free’ and avoid words like ‘odor-neutralizing’ on packaging.
Toxin Number 3: Plastic Fibers – Did you know that your cotton tampon is not actually 100% cotton? Most conventional manufacturers routinely use plastic and synthetic fibers to make your sanitary products. They do this to increase absorbency and because it’s cheaper than using pure cotton. The problem is that synthetic microfibers can irritate your skin and potentially increase your risk for toxic shock syndrome.
Also, remember that we have a worldwide problem of microfibers ending up in our landfills and oceans. Look for brands that use 100% unbleached cotton that is plastic-free.
