Naval commanders from China and the United States on Monday met and talked for the first time face-on since the July 12 arbitral tribunal decision on the South China Sea.
Chinese Navy commander, Admiral Wu Shengli tells his American counterpart that China will not budge an inch on issues of territorial sovereignty.
U.S. chief of Naval Operations John Richardson is making his visit to Beijing. He stays in China from Sunday till Wednesday.
Wu says the Chinese military is the steady and ready force for safeguarding the territorial sovereignty, security and development of the country, and the Chinese Navy is fully prepared to respond to any infringement or provocation.
China will never stop halfway on building islands and reefs because of pressures from some countries. The Nansha Islands are China's inherent territories, so fair construction on these islands are reasonable and legitimate.
Wu also says China will never give up its efforts to resolve the South China Sea issue through peaceful consultations and negotiations although negative factors exist at the moment.
Wu says the China-U.S. relations, especially naval cooperation, matter a lot in safeguarding peace and stability in the South China Sea region. He hopes that both sides can follow several documents signed by the two countries to avoid strategic misjudgment and armed engagement.
The visiting American naval commander tells his Chinese host that the U.S. is willing to work with China to enhance mutual trust, and contribute to closer ties between the navies from both countries.
After the Beijing meeting, Richardson is scheduled to visit the North Sea Fleet and Naval Submarine College in east China's Qingdao City. More on: [ Ссылка ]
