Another on site, in-situ repair job! Here we have a valve seat which has become damaged through normal operating conditions, and is in need of weld build up and post weld machine back to profile. First job is to excavate some seat material to help give the welder a good prep and ensure when the profile is achieved it is wholly in the weld and not the softer parent metal.
Machine of choice this time is the valve borer, which has two axis of movement. Valve seat is a constant radius curve and will be machined using profiled tools. Seat is welded from previous repair and is incredibly hard. Filler metal is ultimet, and is in the same family as stellite and hastelloy. Machining is difficult with the most rigid set ups so a site based machine is far from ideal. Look out for part two when we final machine!
