Buying a baby in the Philippines is as easy as putting up a Facebook post. Within a week, the Undercover Asia team received responses from ‘BMOMs’ or birth mothers asking for ‘adoption fees’ as low as US$100. Some middlemen even have lists of babies on sale, with an average price of about US$200 per baby.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, unwanted pregnancies surged. Public health experts attribute the surge in part to the lack of access to contraceptives during the city’s 9.5-month lockdown from March to December 2020.
