Civil War - GCSE History Revision
Charles I became King of England in 1625. From the start of his reign, his relationship with Parliament gradually deteriorated. Most MPs were Puritans (Protestants) and believed Charles was attempting to restore Catholicism to England. Charles believed in the 'Divine Right of Kings', that he was appointed by God and his authority could not be questioned. In 1629, Charles dismissed Parliament and decided he would rule on his own. In 1640, Charles was forced to recall Parliament to raise extra funds to put down a rebellion by the Scots. Parliament refused and instead aired their greviances which had built up over eleven years of personal rule. In January 1642, Charles entered Parliament and attempted to arrest five leading MPs. The five members escaped and Charles left London for Oxford. Tensions betwee the King and Parliament were now at breaking point and in August 1642, Charles declared war.
