Greater White fronted Goose, Anser albifrons, is a species that winters regularly on marshes in Eastern England but in over forty years of birding my local patch, along the Darent Valley in Kent, UK, I have never previously seen them. When I got a message from a friend that there was an arrival of three White-fronted Geese (also known as Greater White-fronted Goose) in a nearby field I diverted my walk to visit this spot. These are Russian White-fronted Geese, the subspecies albifrons, which can be told from the pinkish colour of their bills. White fronted Goose is a bird that is used to very cold winter weather but I am not and it was quite uncomfortable recording these geese. I have left the wind noise on the audio to convey a little of how fierce the weather was while I was watching these White-fronted Geese.
