STORYLINE:
South Korea launched its second military spy satellite into space on Monday, days after North Korea reaffirmed its plan to fire multiple reconnaissance satellites this year.
Both Koreas launched their respective first spy satellites last year – North Korea in November and South Korea in December — amid heightened animosities between the rivals.
They said their satellites would boost their abilities to monitor each other and enhance their missile attack capabilities.
South Korean Defence Ministry spokesperson Jeon Ha-gyu said during a regular briefing that the satellite was launched from John F. Kennedy Space Center at 8:17 am Korean time (7:17 pm Florida).
Hours after the launch, the South Korean Defence Ministry released a written statement saying that the satellite had successfully made communication with ground control at 10:57 am local time (0157gmt).
