An Israeli airstrike targeted Hamas' military chief Mohammed Deif in Gaza on Saturday, according to a security official.
The health ministry reported that the attack had killed at least 71 Palestinians.
The Israeli military had designated this area as a safe zone, urging Palestinians to seek shelter there.
More than 289 people were injured in the strike, according to a statement from the health ministry.
The Israeli military said it is looking into the incident. Israeli media reports that senior Hamas leader Mohammed Deif was the target of the attack.
It was unclear whether Deif was killed, the security official said.
Army Radio reported that Deif was hiding in a building in the Israeli-designated humanitarian zone.
Deif played a key role in orchestrating Hamas' October 7 attack on Israel, which sparked the conflict in Gaza.
He has survived seven assassination attempts by Israel and has been at the top of Israel's most wanted list for decades.
Benjamin Netanyahu will engage in security discussions throughout the day, as reported by Reuters, his office announced.
