In this video, I’ll answer the question - why is the ocean salty? For many of us, the perfect vacation would be a trip to the beach, with its white sands, breathtaking views, and towering palm trees. During these holidays, we often find ourselves spending endless hours relaxing by the seashore and listening to the peaceful sounds of the crashing waves.
Naturally, the beach is also the ideal place to go swimming, made even more so by the amazing marine life that can be glimpsed every now and then. But it goes without saying that we’ve all also come up sputtering after accidentally swallowing a mouthful of salty seawater.
The ocean makes up the majority of the Earth’s surface – about 70%, in fact. The average salt content of this massive body of water is approximately 35 parts per thousand, which means that there are 120 million tons of salt per cubic mile. This is the reason why seawater is undrinkable and why swimming at the beach always leaves our skin feeling sticky.
So, where did all this salt come from?
