Bach was very keen on the duo of prelude (or toccata) and fugue, like this Prelude and fugue in D minor BWV 539, performed here by Reitze Smits for the Netherlands Bach Society. the origins of BWV 539 are dubious to say the least. What is certain, however, is that the fugue is based on the second movement of Bach’s Sonata for violin solo, BWV 1001, from 1720.
