This is the Boys 3200 Meters Championship race from the 2023 CIF State Track & Field Meet, held May 27 at Buchanan High (Clovis, CA). The race brought together at least eight athletes that had gone sub-9:00 during 2023, including State leader Jason Parra of Millikan and recent CIF-ss Masters winner and State #3 Evan Noonan of Dana Hills. Parra and Matthew Donis of Highland separate themselves from the pack mid-way and battle it out to the end - with Donis digging down and surging with 200 to go and winning in 8:51 over Parra at 8:53. Noonan gets tripped and falls on the backstretch of the 5th lap (visible in the video) and works his way back from the rear to take 3rd in 8:56. Southern Section takes the top 3 over a very strong field. Would have been amazing if Noonan had not fallen because he had his usual striking position. Next year it will be Noonan, Parra and Stefanopoulos in a battle royale.
