Following the insurgency in Borno State, health care workers who were not indigenes of Borno State migrated to other states, health facilities were destroyed, reducing access to health care services for vulnerable groups, especially women and girls. Maternal, newborn and under-5 mortality rates increased as a result of increased home deliveries.
Despite these challenges, the Village Health Worker programme was launched by #GirlChildConcerns, giving hope to community members in Gwoza, Konduga and Bama Local Government Areas (LGAs), as well as internally displaced people (IDPs) camps across Borno State, providing them with access to maternal, newborn and child health services.
Girl Child Concerns identified and trained a dedicated group of young women as Village Health Workers, with support from the Borno State Government.
The stories of these young women are being told in this full documentary
